Physical Education

Balmacewen has made Health and Physical Education a focus area. We understand that when children are fit, healthy and have a high self esteem, they become better learners. We also recognise that there are many intangible qualities within sport which can't be taught, like team work, comradary and how to deal with winning and losing. Balmacewen offers a wide range of sports with skilled and dedicated coaches.

Balmacewen also has a weekly House Sport competition. Each House Group competes against other houses to gain points for the Clarke Cup. Year 8 students are selected as House Captains and Deputy House Captains at the beginning of Term 2 and lead their House Groups in annual school sporting events as well as at House Sport.

Annual sporting events at Balmacewen:

  • Swimming Sports
  • Cross Country

  • Athletics Day

Points from these sporting events are all added towards the Houses total points for the Clarke Cup.

We also have annual exchanges:
  • Winter Exchange with John McGlashan and Columba College (girls netball, girls and boys basketball, girls and boys hockey, boys football and boys rugby)

Balmacewen values and recognises fairplay and good sportsmanship in our students. Each term we award the Fairplay Cup to a student that has been recognised by teachers, coaches and parents, as demonstrating the traits of good sportsmanship and fairplay on the sporting field and in class PE lessons.

If there are any queries regarding sport at Balmacewen, please get in touch with Sports Co-ordinator, Bella James at sport@balmacewen.school.nz
