Kia Ora parents, caregivers and friends of our Year 8 Whānau.

Wow — where has the time gone? Another action-packed 10 weeks have flown by! All Year 8 Staff would like to sincerely thank our Year 8 families and wider community for your continued support in running all our programmes throughout the term.

Wearable Arts

Earlier this term, Rooms 1, 2, 3, and 5 took part in an exciting Wearable Arts PBL (Project-Based Learning) experience. We kicked things off with an inspiring igniter session led by Julie Brawley — a talented local designer who has showcased her own creations in the prestigious World of Wearable Art show.

With Julie’s guidance sparking our creativity, students explored Dunedin’s bin system and used it as the foundation for their design categories. Each group created unique wearable art pieces that not only demonstrated their creativity, but also raised awareness about recycling and sustainability.

The project culminated in a lively fashion show in front of our Year 7 buddy classes, where students proudly presented their outfits on the runway. It was a true celebration of imagination, collaboration, and environmental responsibility.

Tomahawk Lagoon Planting

Rooms 4 and 24 spent a day working alongside Nicole to plant over 500 grasses, shrubs, and trees. This initiative was part of the clean-up effort for the Tomahawk Lagoon.

The valley where we planted will act like a kidney — filtering out waste such as fertiliser and animal waste that washes down the surrounding hills. Both classes thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience and were proud to contribute to such a meaningful, long-term environmental project.

Term 4 Programme

Looking forward to next term, our integrated unit of study is called “Legacy.” The students will create something meaningful for future Year 8 students and the wider school community — a lasting contribution that leaves a positive impact. The goal is to develop a valuable resource or initiative that supports future Year 8 students as they transition from Year 7 into their new role as leaders of our school.

The other major units of work for next term include…

  • Learning a variety of formal dances for our Year 8 Social

  • Creating and performing a class lip sync

  • Contributing to our Year 8 Yearbook

  • Our annual Year 8 touch tournament

  • Writing and presenting speeches

  • Writing a narrative

The Year 8 Staff wish all students an enjoyable and relaxing school break.
