Nau mai, haere mai – Welcome to Balmacewen, Corey Todd
By Sara Quelch | Posted: Wednesday January 28, 2026
Corey joins us from one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest secondary schools, where he previously held a Deputy Principal role. He worked closely with Glen Denham at Massey High School (who has strong Dunedin connections), and brings extensive experience in leadership, student wellbeing, and helping young people make a confident and successful transition into high school.
Originally trained as a secondary Physical Education teacher, Corey has taught a wide range of subjects across his career, including Technology — a subject he is especially looking forward to continuing at Balmacewen. Corey is passionate about student achievement, engagement, and creating learning environments where students are challenged, supported, and well prepared for the next stage of their schooling (with a few laughs along the way).
Corey and his whānau are excited to be settling into life in Ōtepoti. His two adult children are both enjoying studying and playing cricket in Dunedin, which has made the move south an easy decision. Some of you may also recognise his son Jamal, who has very recently worked at Balmacewen as a teacher aide and is keen to return again if the new principal will have him!
Corey’s wife is a primary-trained teacher, RTLB, and qualified counsellor — and the person who first inspired Corey to become a teacher. She has just secured an exciting new role in Dunedin and will be joining the whānau in Term 2.
As a family, they are really looking forward to the strong sense of community Balmacewen is known for, a less intense pace of life, and spending a lot less time stuck in traffic.
Corey is excited to get started, to support our students to thrive, and to play his part in preparing them for successful futures at high school and beyond.
