Animal Attic and Butterfly Wars!

Room 7 spent a fantastic day at the Otago Museum as part of our current Survivor integrated theme.

The first part of the day was spent in the Animal Attic - a very special place at the Museum.  Today we looked at classification of animals - particularly vertebrates - and looked at features of each group.  Our focus was on adaptations and special features that aid survival. We had to search for animals with a number of different adaptations and predict why they may need that feature in order to survive in their habitat. We used this opportunity to gain ideas and information that will help us when we design and create our own creatures over the next few weeks.

The second session was in the Tropical Rainforest ecosystem where we looked again at the habitats and conditions within the Rainforest and what animals and plants lived there. Each group was given a task to look at - Animal adaptations, Plant adaptations, Food webs and Relationships.  We had the opportunity to explore, ask questions and investigate different areas and observe the butterflies.

This experience was very valuable in bringing to life the ideas and research we have been doing and discussing in class and gave us many ideas for the ASPIRE inquiry phase of our unit.
