Term 2 Sports Wrap Up

We had 5 students compete at the South Island Cross Country Champs and 4 students compete at the Road Cycling Champs in Invercargill. The Balmacewen students did really well, with all students placing in the top 5 for both events. The girls Kiwi Tag (Rugby League team) came away with the win in an intense final against Tahuna Intermediate. The Gold Balmacewen Water Polo team travelled to Christchurch to compete in the Canterbury Water Polo Festival. They had a very full weekend and came away with the silver medal in a close final match. The Balmacewen Rugby League Team were defending their trophy at the Rugby League Festival coming away with second place after losing to Tahuna in golden point!
Balmacewen has had a very successful term with chess, coming away with the top 3 places at the regional event earlier in the term and taking first and second place at the teams champs. The team that won has qualified for the nationals in Auckland next term!
Balmacewen Intermediate had 130 students competing at the annual Southland Boys and Southland Girls High School Sports exchange. Competing at both schools in Netball, Basketball, Rugby, Football, Hockey, Volleyball and Chess. There were some close matches, however Southland Boys and Southland Girls came away with the win this year, winning 8 matches to 6. We look forward to hosting them next year and winning back the trophy!
Rugby: Girls won 20 - 12. Boys lost 64 - 31
Football: Girls won 4 - 2. Boys won 8 -1
Chess: Boys won 9 - 3
Basketball and Netball: Both boys and girls lost
Volleyball: Both teams won
Hockey: Both teams lost
We look forward to another big term of sport as we head into term 3. We continue with Netball, Basketball and Hockey and hope to play some more Football and Rugby fixtures against some of the other schools in Dunedin. Badminton will start up, school cross country and the John McGlashan/ Columba Sports Exchange will take place in term 3 along with other events such as the Otago Regional Chess Championships, held at Balmacewen Intermediate. And good luck to everyone competing in events over the school holidays.
