On Sunday the 14th of August, I competed in the New Zealand Schools Duathlon Champs which was held at the Pukekohe Raceway, Auckland. This was my second year competing in this event after finishing third last year. I wanted to come back again to try and attempt to win my age group.

On the morning of the event, I felt so nervous I was nearly sick. This quickly disappeared once the race was underway. There were six other athletes in my age group (under 12) - all from the North Island. The distances for my age were 2.25km run, 8km bike and 1km run. The cycle was 3 laps around the Pukekohe Raceway. After the first run, I came into transition in first place but then I was passed by three competitors on the bike. Once out on the last run, I passed them again but was unsure if I had actually won until I saw the official results. I WON!!! My time was 31.42. I was so happy to have achieved my goal. I was awarded a trophy and a gold medal.

I want to go back again next year to win the under 13 age group. I want to also thank my dad for coming up to Auckland with me and for helping me with my bike on race day.
