At Balmacewen Intermediate, we believe every student can achieve and find success in mathematics. Please read on for information about our maths programme.

The move to Intermediate - What to expect:

A change in Curriculum expectations at Year 7

Big emphasis on basic facts

Students need to have fluent recall of key basic facts:

  • addition / subtraction facts

  • multiplication / division facts

  • proportional relationships

How can you help your child:

  1. Stay positive, avoid sharing stories of math failure or even dislike.

  2. Encourage children to work on problems that are challenging for them, so that they can make mistakes.

  3. Avoid timing children to measure progress- encourage thinking and effort.

  4. Check in with your children when they are completing their maths homework. They might need some help or encouragement.

  5. Give children math puzzles and play games.

A game example...

Multiplication Battle:

This idea might be an old favourite, but it’s a classic and a great mathematics warm up activity for two players.

It really is as simple as picking two cards from a pack of standard playing cards to generate a multiplication number sentence. Whoever has the highest product keeps the cards.
