Year 8 News

A very warm welcome to our Year 8 Whanau and friends.

Our integrated theme this term is called “Eureka.” This will see the students conduct a variety of experiments, have community experts present science and participate in a visit to the Otago Museum. We have designed an exciting PBL (Project Based Learning) task which will allow your child to direct their own learning. They will seek to answer a question from their class’s wondering wall. Collaborating with others and being an independent learner will certainly be 2 skills we will be focusing on.

We are also well and truly underway with our Year 8 Camping programme. It is wonderful for all students to be able to take part in this wonderful experience. The 4 day programme with our specialist outdoor provider has been a highlight. The activities that the students experience are an amazing way to relate to the natural environment. As we move into the winter months it is very important that the students have lots of warm clothing to enjoy the outdoor activities. Thank you to all helpers for making this experience possible.

Later this term, Friday 16th June) we will head into the Edgar Centre for a skills and drills morning with Otago Polytechnic students. We have participated in this event over the last few years and it has been a fun way for our students to be exposed to numerous skills and sports. It promises to be a fun, hands on event. More information will follow closer to the time

An ongoing focus for our Year 8 community is the teaching of Te Ara Balmac (The Balmac Way). This term it has seen classes look at self confidence and self esteem alongside diversity. The purpose of these units are to recognise and appreciate our own uniqueness as well asthose of our peers.

Kind Regards
