Message from the Principal

We are well and truly settled into the term. It's great watching students take full part in our busy programme.

Kia ora koutou katoa

It has been a great start to the year!

Excellent energy and a positive attitude is very evident in all school activity and it can be seen in a variety of settings. The atmosphere in our classrooms and playground has been respectful and kind with a focus on building friendships and inclusive play. It's such an important area for this age group as well continue to support personal growth and development through our Balmacewen Values.

It's also been great to see our Outdoor Education Programme back into full swing. Year 7 classes have really enjoyed their Waihola experience with the weather (mostly) playing a part in a very successful programme. A big thank you to all camp volunteers for giving your time so generously.

Hopefully by now, you have had the opportunity to meet your child's teacher to discuss early observations and learning progress. A strong home/school connection is such an important part of a child's learning.  We're here to help! If you have questions about how you can best support your child at home, please don't hesitate to ask.

Finally, you will be aware that NZEI , the teachers union, is taking industrial action seeking improved pay and conditions for teachers. There is a glaring gap in conditions and resourcing between the primary and secondary sector which does need to be addressed and a concerning trend of teacher shortage across the country. Hopefully this action is short-lived and that teachers are better recognised and valued by the government in their upcoming contract negotiations.

As you'll see in this newsletter, there's plenty to celebrate. Well done to everyone for an excellent start to the year!
