Year 8's Becoming Kaitiaki

By Paul Kemmett | Posted: Tuesday August 23, 2022
This term our Year 8 PBL focus is Kaitiakitanga - guardianship of our environment.

We started this process last week by exploring a range of environmental issues we are currently facing. As a year group we all went to the movies together to watch the documentary 2040. This was an awesome experience and provoked lots of thoughtful discussion.

Over the next few weeks we will be continuing to investigate what it means to be Kaitiaki and the responsibility we have in order to protect our tangata (people) and taiao (environment).

We will consider why it is important to protect our land and people and the implications of what will happen if we don’t make change.

Together we will identify current issues that are faced both globally and locally at Balmacewen. Then as a class we will research and gather data around a current issue of their choice and identify ways to educate and inspire change to ensure a sustainable future for our people and our environment.

We look forward to sharing our projects with you at the end of the term.
