Sassenachs Rugby

Balmacewen entered three teams in this year's Sassenach tournament held on Wednesday 22nd August.

The Year 7 and Year 8 and Girls were all quickly into their games on a chilly and at times wet Wednesday at Bishops court.

The Girls team had a round robin format with each team playing 4 games and a lot of fun was had. For some girls this was their first opportunity to play rugby and we were lucky enough to have a couple of experienced rep players too.

The girls's first game was against KVC Green which they won 41-nil. The next game was against KVC Red which was a combined KVC & Kavanagh team.  Balmacewen won this 41-12.  A more defensive game against Taieri saw them win 34-nil.

The Tahuna girls team had also won all of their games so this meant the final game against Tahuna would decide the winner.  The girls put it all out there but unfortunately the score went against them. The final score was  28- 18.

Stand out players were Madi Dysart who was the tackling machine, Anya Clark with her speed and Lara McCulloch with her ball handling skills

The Year 7 Boys team had a day of mixed results but a lot of fun. Some played in new positions and some experienced rugby for the first time. The standout player for this team was Makasini Takataka.

The Year 8 Boys team lost their final to a strong Tahuna team, however they played with a lot of pride and determination. Dean Gulliver was a threat every time he got involved throughout the day and was complemented by Matthew Sebelin and Will Ryan.
