Room 6 experiences cerebral palsy.

Last week Room 6 students listened as Cherie talked about cerebral palsy. That is what her daughter Poppy has.

Cerebral palsy is a physical disability that stops people from being able to move their body easily. It can also affect the way we talk. Cerebral palsy is often something that lasts a long time. It can get worse or it can improve over time.

Casts Prove Popular but also Uncomfortable

To help us understand a bit more about what cerebral palsy might feel like we put on some casts.

“It was a lot different from what I thought. Having a cast on my arm made my movement way more restricted. Lots of things that I do everyday without thinking about it were really challenging.”

-Bethany

While we had the casts on we weren’t allowed to talk. Most students found that hard. Some people also got to have a go in the wheelchair.

Around 500,000 children under the age of 18 have cerebral palsy. It is the most common physical disability for children to have.

Having Cherie come to talk to us helped us all to understand a bit more about what it might be like for Poppy all the time.

If you have any questions you can ask someone in Room 6.
