Halfway through Term 2!

So far, Term 2 has been lots of fun for all of us and over the past five weeks, Room 23 has been up to some exciting things.

All the members of Room 23 set goals at the beginning of the term. We had to set a personal, academic and cultural/sporting goal. We decorated them and personalised them and they all look spectacular! I think it’s great that we all have a challenge or something to work towards this term.

Speaking of challenges, everyone has completed Mega Maths Month and we all made amazing improvements. Mega maths month is a test that lasts three minutes and tests us on our basic facts. We did lots of work during our maths sessions to improve our accuracy and recall speed.

Room 23 did some activities related to the Commonwealth Games. We began in Term 1, while they were taking place, and since we were enjoying it so much, we decided that we should continue. We were each given a country, and we competed in different games to win medals for our country. We took part in high jump, javelin and sprints. During the sprints, we each raced and got timed. Then we had semi-finals and finals for the faster runners and the slower runners. I think we all really enjoyed doing sprints because everyone got to have a go whether they were the fastest or not.

We have also been doing experiments and activities related to our topic which is ‘wonderment’. We have been focusing on flight. We have learnt about the four forces of flight and the role that each of them play during flight. We have also made different paper planes taking into account the impact of the four different forces. In partners, we made three different paper planes. We timed how long they stayed in the air and measured how far each plane flew. We are looking forward to the ‘Year 8 Paper Plane Fly Off’.

Room 23 have had three sessions with Ms Dick. Our first session was looking at LED light circuits. We each had templates and made two circuits using: copper tape, LED lights and a battery. We all gave it a go and most of them didn’t work but we all still learned a lot. Using that knowledge, we created our own light up cards in our next session. Our third session last week was looking at ‘Taleblazer’, a programme that allows you to create an augmented reality game based on visiting different locations. We are looking forward to completing our games so that we can get out and play them.

Room 23 have recently arrived back from camp at Berwick and I am sure all the members of our class can agree that it was an amazing experience. We not only enjoyed ourselves, but we also added a lot to our character and class culture. We were told to focus on three things by Miss Elliott: teamwork, to give everything a go and to contribute as much as we could to improve our class culture. I believe that Room 23 did all three of these things exceptionally well. All of us worked well as a team and we all gave everything a go. Many of us got out of our comfort zone and tried things new things. We did many fun activities like the crazy swing, flying fox (even blindfolded!) confidence course, abseiling, kayaking and lip synch. The most memorable activities for me would be the Mud Run. We all really pushed ourselves and helped each other as well while having a great time. I also really liked doing the lip sync. Everyone did an amazing job! A huge Thank You to all the parents that came along! We all really appreciated your help and hard work.

So far, Term 2 has been such a great term for Room 23 and we eagerly look forward for all the things to come.
