Otago Boys High School Science Trip

Room 8 were lucky enough to experience a fantastic one off science lesson with Tim Ashdown.

On Wednesday 17th May Room 8 went to Otago Boys High School for a science fair lesson with the wonderful Mr. Ashdown. Everybody in Room 8 was very excited about this opportunity.

First he talked about the periodic table with one element… Copper, he showed a small slither of the copper as well as the bunsen burner (a stalk of metal which flows out gas when you turn it on to make a flame of fire). We then held the slice of copper above the burning flame to make copper oxide, which turned the copper completely black. After that we let the copper oxide sit in Hydrochloric acid which turned the water to a blue colour. After we filtered it we dropped two iron nails into the solution. It turned the nails into copper.

Overall, everybody really enjoyed our trip to Otago Boys High School. We are very grateful to have this experience with Mr. Ashdown and this experience will help us with our learning in the future.
