Museum Madness!

On Monday, Room 23 and 24 visited the Otago Museum as part of our ongoing ‘Adaptation’ unit this term. We learned about ecosystems, habitats and the way animals adapt to their environment in tropical areas. We visited the Animal Attic, Discovery World and The Butterfly Museum.

First, we visited the Animal Attic. Myself and a couple of other people were researching the birds group which was really interesting. It was cool to see so many different types of birds and see their own way of adapting to their environment, as well as finding ways to protect themselves from predators.

Next, we went to Discovery World. This was probably the most exciting part of our trip to the museum. They had lots of educational, scientific yet really fun activities to do, like the slide, which I think a lot of Room 23 enjoyed. My favourite was the light box. All the lights inside it made it really beautiful and relaxing. Apparently, this room shows us what the big bang would have looked like. Overall, I think Room 23 had lots of fun looking around in Discovery World and discovering things we never knew before.

Lastly, we visited the Butterfly Museum. We found out that these butterflies came from tropical countries where the climate is hot and humid, which is what the butterflies need to survive. Once we went inside we could really tell the temperature difference, it was most certainly hot and humid! It was definitely worth it though, as we got to see so many butterflies. There were birds, turtles and tarantulas (the tarantulas were in glass cases, thankfully). We all loved exploring the Butterfly Museum, though some of us got quite a fright! Afterwards we got to look at insects, an egg, and much more through microscopes. We learned about photosynthesis and the role it plays in the food chain.

Overall, Room 23 had such a great time at the Otago Museum. We found out lots about adaptations, animals, and lots of other helpful information which we can apply to our work this term. A huge thank you to our parent helpers that came along with us!
