Recently Room 5 visited the Art Gallery as part of our topic for this term. Check out what we got up to.

The focus of our Art Gallery trip was on healthy eating. John, who is an educational tutor at the art gallery, took the children on a tour of the gallery looking at the different artworks on display. He then taught the children some history of Māori kai in pre-European times.  He talked about the types of food that were grown, harvested, hunted, stored and what times of the year they were collected.

John also educated the children on how food companies entice us to buy their products by using smart advertising tricks. The lesson for the children from John’s wealth of knowledge was to make careful decisions about what foods they choose because good nutrition can help their changing bodies.

The children then finished off their trip creating their our own artworks. Using pastels, stencils, dye and coloured paper, they created their own pop art fruit bowls.
