School Council Round Up

The school council have had a busy and productive year.

This year the school council selected a number of charities to support based on suggestions from their classrooms. As a result we have made donations over the year to Ronald McDonald House, Kids Can,The Cancer Society, The Mitochondrial Foundation and The SPCA. Some of the fundraisers we have done include: mufti days, a school disco, Daffodil Day, sausage sizzles and a bake sale. We also organised some care packages to drop off at the Dunedin Mosque earlier this year.

We have also worked in teams to solve a number of issues around the school. One of these initiatives was getting scooter stands to resolve the problem of cluttered doorways and resource rooms. We have surveyed classes who have issues with light in the classroom hitting the data projector. As a result, next year there has been funding allocated for blinds in some of these rooms. We trialed using chalk footsteps on the path by the driveway to make it safer for students to walk in and out of school. After observing students however, this made little difference, therefore we decided not to purchase paint to make this more  permanent. To address rubbish around the school we made posters and discussed issues with litter at assembly to promote awareness and tidiness around the school.

Some money that we have saved from fundraisers over the year has been used to purchase items identified by students as helpful or useful. Some of the things we have purchased (other than the scooter stands) include music stands for resource rooms, a new bike stand for the heights area, netball nets for the Hall Courts, Picnic tables for the playground and containers of board games for each block to be used at lunch time.

I would like to thank all of the councillors and their deputies for their commitment, hard work and dedication over the year. They have been an outstanding group of students to work with. Have a safe and relaxing holiday break.
