Masterpieces in Miniature

Our Year 8 artists transformed the studio into an architectural playground creating sculptural dwellings.

Guided by our core success skill of being self-motivated, these young visionaries drove their own artistic processes from conceptualisation to the final projects, proving themselves to be highly skilled, independent learners.

The creative marathon commenced with Milestone 1. Students designed and constructed the foundational armatures of their houses, utilising structural techniques and papier-mâché overlays to build a robust three-dimensional canvas.

Milestone 2 challenged our artists to cultivate a unique conceptual theme. Embracing total creative autonomy, they explored a breathtaking array of ideas: ranging from anime-inspired illustrative sanctuaries and scenic Wanaka mountain landscapes to nostalgic Beatles submarines and bold, sculptural structures. During this phase, they also used three types of surfacing, to create tactile relief and dynamic textures across their structural facades.

In Milestone 3, applied sophisticated underpainting and diverse brush techniques to establish the base of their exteriors.

This set the stage for the highly complex Milestone 4, a true test of mixed-media mastery. Each student was tasked with a demanding list of visual elements. These included components of still life, a painted landscape, a drawing, a hand-modelled sculpture, typographic text, something influenced by a contemporary street artist, and a precision laser cut element.

The resulting artworks are deeply personal, multimedia narratives. The students can be proud of their development as artists and as learners.
