Term 1 Summer Sport

Term 1 has been filled with sport! From weekly summer sports, to all day sports festivals, we have covered it all! Futsal, volleyball, water polo and touch have been played weekly, with Balmacewen teams dominating in these.

We have had a number of sporting events happen during the term; boys and girls ‘have-a-go-day’, a girls rippa rugby festival, a golf tournament and a cricket festival and not to mention, a visit from the Highlanders!

The Balmacewen Lions won the girls touch final, in a nail biting finish! The Balmacewen Gold water polo team won their grade, dominating their games throughout the season.

Highlanders Visit

On Friday, week 6, 30 year 8 rugby players were given the opportunity to partake in a skills and drills session with three Highlanders players. It was an awesome experience and I’m sure the students gained some skills from this day!

Sports Days

On Wednesday, week 9, the Spirit Sisters Rippa Rugby festival had 50 of our year 7 and 8 girls playing Rippa Rugby all day at Logan Park. The girls had an awesome day with some teams making it through the day unbeaten!

In week 7 we had two fun days of sport for boys and girls. Students were given the opportunity to participate in rugby, hockey, football and cricket. We had around 50 students participate on each day, with the girls watching the White Ferns play Zimbabwe in Cricket!

On Friday in week 8 we had 4 golf teams participate at the Dunedin Intermediate Schools Tournament. One of our teams placed 1st equal but ended up missing out on the win in a chip off with three other teams! The boys had a great day and hopefully we will see some of the teams qualify for the Otago Champs later in the year!

Balmacewen had 1 girls and 3 boys teams participate in a cricket festival held at Bishopscourt. The weather was incredible and we had 3 out of our 4 teams come away undefeated. Well done!

Otago Primary Schools Swimming Championships

On Sunday 29th March, Balmacewen had 20 athletes participating at the swimming champs in over 90 events and 9 relays. We came away with some amazing results and a few records broken. Fergus K broke the records for the 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke in the 10 year old age group. The 11 year old 4x50m mixed freestyle record was broken by Fergus K, Ollie W, Freddie W and Hugo S. We had a number of students place in the top 5 of their events and the 12 year old mixed freestyle relay placed third overall, consisting of Arnelle H, Fleur G, Reece R and Luna-Marama M.

Thanks for an awesome term of sport! We are looking forward to winter and a new round of sports to take place!
