End of Winter Sports Wrap Up

Basketball had some close games to finish off the season, with our top year 7 and 8 boys and girls teams all placing in the top 4 with the remainder of the teams having a fun and competitive season. Our Year 7 A team took out the grade! This team went through the competition undefeated, and won the final convincingly. See photo below. Our nine netball teams completed the season on a high, with our year 8 Firebirds team and mixed year 7 and 8 team the Giants, taking out their division. Our top year 7 team, the Swifts and top year 8 team, the Vixens placed third overall. Hockey has completed the season in a full field 11-aside format, getting our year 8s ready for High School Hockey. Thank you to all of the coaches, managers and referees who supported the teams this season. We could not have done it without you.

During week 4 we participated in our annual winter sports exchange with John McGlashan College and Columba College. It was a close competition with the Boys winning 6 out of 7 of the fixtures at Johnnies and the girls winning 2 out of 6 of their fixtures against Columba. The students performed well and represented the school with pride throughout the day. Also in week 4, we had 13 students participate in the Otago Regional Chess Competition held at Balmacewen Intermediate. All of the students came away with a placing, either individually or in a team and our top team qualified for the national competition in Hamilton later in the year. Finally our boys football team had a game against Trinity Catholic College earlier in the team. The boys came away with a convincing win and displayed some awesome skills and team work.

As sports take a break for a few weeks, Balmacewen Intermediate has 6 teams competing in the Dunedin badminton competition for the remainder of the term and table tennis begins in week 8 on Tuesday 8th September. We have 3 teams competing in a Rippa Rugby Festival in week 6, a great lead into touch for next term. Keep an eye out for term 4 summer sports trials, held towards the end of the term, volleyball, touch, water polo and futsal.

Well done to all of the students who represented Balmacewen this winter season and once again, thank you to the coaches, managers, supporters and referees, these sports would not be able to happen without you.
