Bill's Beep Test Bonanza

Year 8 student Bill Campbell has achieved a well deserved acknowledgement at the national ASB Brightsparks event for his science fair invention to do with the infamous beep test. Here is Bill's recount of the event

On the 7th of November I got to travel to Auckland as a finalist for the ASB BrightSparks competition.

It was cool to meet all the other finalists and see their projects. All of them were unique and interesting. Some of the stories behind them were interesting also; like how Kate’s (overall female winner) brother washed her whistle which had her custom electronics in it - proving it was not water proof!

There were various events during the day, one of them being a tour of ASB NZ headquarters.

It was like a mini google HQ with quirky “Ear Chairs” and a boardroom that looked just like the bridge of a starship. At the end, on the way back down we all got to go in a glass elevator which made you feel sick if you dared glance down.

Another event was a series of guest speakers who came in to talk to us about their lives and their companies along with some advice for us. It was interesting hearing about patents and how important they are.

Thanks very much to all my testers, who were very patient with my technical problems and the teachers who provided support.
