Balmac Gold win Bronze at South Islands

The South Island Intermediate Water polo tournament was held in Dunedin last weekend.

Balmacewen entered two teams in the competition -the Gold Team played in the A grade and the Silver Water Polo Team was entered for development for next year in the B grade.

The level of competition was much harder than we have experienced as the Christchurch teams in particularly play all year round and we were not used to the speed and physicality of the games.

Both teams improved throughout the weekend and we adjusted to the much higher level of competition. The Silver team had a couple of close games and their skills and the experience they had will mean next year they will be stronger,

The Gold team - ended up playing off in the 3rd and 4th playoff against a team that the day before had beaten them 8-1. The game was very intense and Balmac came out fighting strong to lead the first quarter 2-0 - a very tight and hard fought game to end up tied 3 all at full time. (Henry absent from the photo above).

This lead to a penalty shoot out - 5 players from each team - again it was a draw at the end - this was very intense! We had to go to a sudden death penalty shoot out and we won - that placed us third in the south island.

Shima and Ollie were also nominated for the Tournament team by other team's coaches.  Thank you to all parents who supported over the weekend, teachers who helped and to Quentin the Gold team coach.
