Andrew Hunter - Principal- Andrew is the principal of Balmacewen Intermediate. He has had 21 years of teaching experience including 16 as principal. Andrew has been the principal of Balmacewen for the last 9 years and thoroughly enjoys working with the staff and students. Andrew is passionate about the place of Intermediate Schools in our schooling system and has been elected onto the board of the New Zealand Intermediate and Middle Schools Executive. Andrew strongly believes in our school vision of Learning is Forever.

Andrew enjoys sports, music, spending time with his girls and reading in his spare time.

Sara Quelch - Deputy Principal - Sara is Deputy Principal at Balmacewen Intermediate School.
She has 10 years teaching experience in Intermediate schools and she is a strong believer in the value of Intermediate schools for meeting the diverse needs of our emerging adolescents. Sara is an advanced interactive whiteboard user and she is a leader in our school in this area. She has also been Year 7 Dean and Head of sport in her time at Balmacewen Intermediate School.
Sara enjoys the diversity that comes with teaching and leading at an Intermediate school. Every day is different. “I love the fact that we offer such a wide range of cultural, learning and sporting experiences at our school, and that our students take these opportunities with such positivity and enthusiasm.
Sara is the teacher in charge of hockey at Balmacewen and she also coaches Waterpolo.
When she is not at school, Sara enjoys art, baking, running and shopping and spending time with her family.

Terry Tarapi - Assistant Prinicpal/Year 8 Dean Terry Tarapi is the Assistant Principal and leader of the Year 8 team. He is in charge of Volleyball and Softball and coaches in many other sports. Terry majored in Mathematics at university and is in charge of the schools maths programme.

Charlotte Cooper - Year 7 Dean (2012 Maternity Leave) Charlotte has a depth of knowledge and some great teaching and leadership skills, She is the Year 7 Dean, Charlotte will be taking Maternity leave late in Term 1 this year and making a return to the classroom in 2013.

Lisa Shea - Year 8 Assistant Dean- Lisa has a wealth of experience in all levels of primary school education but Balmacewen holds a special place for Lisa as a former student she has now worked here for the last 15 years. Lisa is a busy member of the staff with responsibilities in science and EOTC. She also coaches Netball, Waterpolo and Cricket teams and co-ordinates the highly popular and successful Wearable Arts show each year. She was award the Sport Otago volunteer of the year in 2010!

Beth Downie- Acting Dean in Year Seven. - Beth has taught at a number of schools, starting her career working at Te Puke Intermediate where she taught for 3 years, and then she did what most kiwis do and taught in London! After 4 years in London she moved back to Dunedin and taught at Broad Bay for 3 years and now luckily we have had Beth's services for the last four years!
Beth enjoys school camps as they are a great way for her to get her class to come together as a class and really enjoy each others company outside of the normal 4 walls! As well as experience all the challenges together that camp has to offer! "I like my students to be organised, responsible, enthusiastic and positive in their learning and in return they get a teacher who displays the same qualities." Beth loves spending time hanging out with her cool 6 year old son Thomas at the pool, the library and the park!

Deb Tasi Cortz Acting Assistant Dean Year Seven, Year 7 Classroom Teacher - Deb is in her third year at Balmacewen. Deb will be in Room 26 this year and working with year seven students and she will also continue to coach the Otago Netball Team.

Andrew Sloan - Year 8 Classroom TeacherAndrew is our resident "endurance sport junkie & fitness freak"! He has completed numerous Coast to Coasts and is a regular competitor in multisport, triathlon and endurance sport events. He brings his personal expertise to school and is in charge of EOTC and the highly successful Cross Country team. Andrew is responsible for the school website and fixing any issues with computers. He has been teaching for twelve years in Dunedin, Christchurch and Japan at a variety of age levels. Andrew is an approachable and hard working teacher who likes to set challenges and goals for students both mentally and physically. Andrew is making the big shift into Year 8 this year.

Angela Burden Year 8 Classroom Teacher (Maternity Leave Terms 1-3 2012) Angela is in her third year at Balmacewen. Angela has 8 years teaching experience at this age level and has also worked for the National Education Monitoring Project where her experience is be invaluable. Angela has a passion for literacy and enjoys playing touch in her spare time. Angela is on Maternity Leave from Term 4 2011 through to the end of 2012.

Tony has been at Balmacewen for the past 7 years. He has a strong interest in the arts especially music. Tony’s other passion is sports, specifically soccer. He is a noted coach in Dunedin and will this year be managing the Balmacewen soccer academy.

Kelly McGregor Yerar 8 Classroom Teacher -
Kelly will be taking a break from running the performing arts in the school and retunring to her first love of sport. She will be teaching year 8 again in Room 2 and in her spare time she will continue to persue her interest in long distance running.

Luke Herden Year 7 Classroom Teacher - World famous in Oamaru the winning 2nd division rugby captain 2010 Luke teaches year 7 in Room 5. He is also the teacher in charge of all of the ICT equipment in the school.

Anna Garthwaite Year 7 Classroom Teacher - Anna is in her 6th year teaching at Balmacewen and in her 16th year of teaching. Anna has taught both in New Zealand and overseas at a wide range of levels. Anna really enjoys teaching Year 7 & 8. Anna's teaching highlights include - every year meeting and teaching a wide range of awesome students. What makes Anna a great teacher is the way she enjoys her students and helps develop them into amazing young adults.
Anna's personal interests - Being a Mum to her two sons, travelling, improving my skiing, socialising with friends and much more.

Penny Oliver Year 8 Classroom Teacher- Penny is in her 2nd year of Teaching at Balmacewen. Penny will be teaching year 8 students in Room 8 again this year as well as taking all manner of sports and cultural teams!

Billy Napier Year 7 Classroom Teacher -Billy is involved in numerous sports teams including rugby, netball and touch. Billy is the person to ask if you have any sports or music trivia questions!. Billy will be teaching once again in Room 11 with year 7 students

Kopua Waititi Maori and Cultural Activities- Matua is taking a break from the classroom to follow his own business interests and will be at Balmacewen weekly to take Kapa Haka and Te Reo classes.

Mary Brady - Dean of specialist subjects & Art Teacher- Mary will be continuing the high quality art programme that the school is so proud of. The recently painted murals and pieces that hang in the foyer are a testiment to her teaching ability. Mary was once a general classroom teacher but "saw the light" and retrained at art school to be an art teacher.

Alex Buttery Food Technology Teacher- We like to call her the Muffin lady as the morning teas she make are quite exceptional and highly appreciated. Alex will continue to teach biotechnology and other interesting technological ideas to the Balmacewen, Green Island and Columba students this year.

Mark Henderson Hard Materials Technology Teacher-Mark is one of our talented muscians on staff but he also teachers in the hard materials room. This is Marks third year of teaching at Balmacewen and he will continue to coach Hockey in 2011.

Janne Miller Maths Extension Teacher - Janne is our mathematics specialist. She runs the year 7 and 8 mathematics extension programmes each morning as well as the hugely successful mathletics teams.

Katy has been at balmacewen since 2003. Katy has Riley, Lucy and most recently Annalise (Jan 2012) who will keep her busy away from school for the most of this year.

Nicole Kereopa (Leave 2012)- Nicole is icurrently on leave travelling abroad and will make a return to Balmacewen in the future after her travels
Lauren Roney (2011-2012)- Lauren is currnelty on leave exploring the world!! Lauren is our PE guru. She is incharge of the school PE programme and events along with Heidi Cleland as well as running a very interesting programme in room 9 with year 8 students. Lauren will continue to play rugby for Pirates and Otago this year and will keep coaching the highly successful girls cricket team.
Ann Venables - Ann has been the the longest serving member of our staff and runs the ever popular Foods and Fabrics program. She has taught over 7,000 students including four of of our current staff members. Ann has retired from her teaching position for 2012.
Lindsey Moore -An Army marches on its stomach and school operates on its office staff, and Lindsey and Sandra are some of the best. The face of Balmacewen is a friendly one who has a passion for tennis and a spritely back hand!

Keri Ballantyne - Keri has had a role alongside Lindsey and Sandra in the frontline operation of the office in 2011 and is now a key part in the office staff for 2012.
Sandra Patterson - Sandra has resigned from her position as part of the key office staff as of February 2012. We thak her for all of her efforts and wish her well for 2012 and future years.

Peter Friend - In his third year at Balmacewen and the grounds are a testament to how hard Mr Friend works when he isn't busy getting tennis balls off the roof!
Sue Frame - Part one of our awesome twosome "the Sues." Sue F willl be working mainly with the special needs group and extension choir in 2012
Susan Mepham - The second part of the Sues is Susan Mepham. She will be helping Sue F with her role but also teaching the school to sing and also play ukelale this year.
Sue Lowden - Always with a smile on her face, Sue is one of the teacher aides who will be working in many classes this year but mainly in Room 7.
Marloes Leunnisen - Marloes is one of the schools teacher aides, fluent in sign language she will be helping students in many rooms in 2012.
Linda - Is the friendly face behind the canteen door who dishes out all the healthy food that we have on offer.
