Andrew Hunter - Principal- Andrew is the principal of Balmacewen Intermediate. He has had 20 years of teaching experience including 15 as principal. Andrew has been the principal of Balmacewen for the last 8 years and thoroughly enjoys working with the staff and students. Andrew is passionate about the place of Intermediate Schools in our schooling system and has been elected onto the board of the New Zealand Intermediate and Middle Schools Executive. Andrew strongly believes in our school vision of Learning is Forever.

Andrew enjoys sports, music, spending time with his girls and reading in his spare time.

Simon Clarke- Deputy Prinicpal - Simon has been at Balmacewen for seven years, five of them as a teaching Deputy Principal. He has been teaching in Intermediates for 13 years and loves the challenges and excitement that you find in Intermediates. Simon has a strong interest in ICT and provides much of the technical and professional support in this area. His other passion has been working with children in multimedia such as the moviemakers group and Red Top TV. He is also the teacher in charge of Basketball and can be often found on the courts at lunchtime taking practices.

Terry Tarapi - Assistant Prinicpal/Year 8 Dean Terry Tarapi is the Assistant Principal and leader of the Year 8 team. He is in charge of Volleyball and Softball and coaches in many other sports. Terry majored in Mathematics at university and is in charge of the schools maths programme.

Sara Quelch - Year 7 Dean - Sara is the Dean for the year seven staff while Mrs Cooper is away on maternity leave.  Sara herself is back from maternity leave and is looking forward to providing leadership in year seven and continuing to refine the schools inquiry programme.

Lisa Shea - Year 8 Assistant Dean- Lisa has a wealth of experience in all levels of primary school education but Balmacewen holds a special place for Lisa as a former student she has now worked here for the last 14 years. Lisa is a busy member of the staff with responsibilities in science, EOTC and improving the transistion between year 8 and high school. She also coaches Netball, Waterpolo and Cricket teams and co-ordinates the highly popular and successful Wearable Arts show each year.

Beth Downie- Assistant Dean in Year Seven. - Beth has taught at a number of schools, starting her career working at Te Puke Intermediate where she taught for 3 years, and then she did what most kiwis do and taught in London! After 4 years in London she moved back to Dunedin and taught at Broad Bay for 3 years and now luckily we have had Beth's services for the last two years!

Beth enjoys school camps as they are a great way for her to get her class to come together as a class and really enjoy each others company outside of the normal 4 walls! As well as experience all the challenges together that camp has to offer! "I like my students to be organised, responsible, enthusiastic and positive in their learning and in return they get a teacher who displays the same qualities." Beth loves spending time hanging out with her cool 3 year old son Thomas at the pool, the library and the park!

Andrew Sloan - Andrew is our resident "fitness freak"! He has completed the Coast to Coast and is a regular in multisport activities around Dunedin. He brings his personal expertise to school and is in charge of EOTC and the highly successful Cross Country team. He has been teaching for nine years in Dunedin, Christchurch and Japan at a variety of age levels. Andrew is an approachable and hard working teacher who likes to set challenges and goals for students both mentally and physically.

Ann Venables - Ann is the longest serving member of our staff and runs the ever popular Foods and Fabrics program. She has taught over 7,000 students including four of of our current staff members. Ann takes her work home with her literally as she is working towards self sufficiency.

Angela Burden - is new to the staff for 2010.  Angela has 6 years teaching experience at this age level and has also worked for the National Education Monitoring Project where her experience will be invaluable.  Angela has a passion for literacy and enjoys playing touch in her spare time.

We also welcome Deb Tasi Cortz to the staff for 2010.  Not only is Deb a fantastic addition to the staff but she will also be serving Otago Netball as the new coach.  Deb will be in Room 26 this year and working with year seven students.

Tony Martin - Tony has been at Balmacewen for the past 5 years.  He has a strong interest in the arts especially music.  Tony’s other passion is sports, specifically soccer.  He is a noted coach in Dunedin and will this year be managing Balmacewen inaugural soccer academy.

Kelly McGregor - We welcome back Kelly McGregor to the staff after a two year stint teaching in London and relieving in Room 10 last year.  Kelly along with Katy will be running the arts programme in the school while in her spare time she will continue to persue her interest in long distance running.

Katy Fitzgerald - We also welcome back Katy from Maternity leave after having her second baby.  Katy will resume her teaching in year seven for 2010 and will be in Room 10.  Katy has responsibility for the music programme for 2010.

Luke Herden - Luke has one of the most important jobs in the school, that of school DJ at the disco.  He is also the teacher in charge of all of the ICT equipment in the school along with running a year seven class in Room 5.  Luke will continue to play rugby in 2010 and take a number of sporting teams in the school.

Karyn Summers -Sadly is due to leave us at the end of term 1 for better and brighter things. She will be helping out in all of our classrooms for the next few weeks but mainly in Room 1 and 23.

Anna Garthwaite - Anna has worn many hats in her time at Balmacewen and between having her two children. She has been an art teacher, reliever, year 8 class teacher and now teaching in year 7 in Room 3.

Nicole Kereopa - Nicole is in her second year of teaching at Balmacewen. A successful netballer in her own right she has been heavily involved in the coaching of netball last year. Nicole is once again in Room 4 with year 8 students.

Kopua Waititi - Matua is the second of three teachers in their second year at Balmacewen. He has come from teaching Intermediates in Blenheim and takes our highly successful Kapa Haka and cultural performance groups. Matua will be working with a group of year 8 students in Room 8.

Billy Napier - Is the last our our second year teachers. Billy is involved in numerous sports teams including rugby, netball and touch. Billy will be teaching once again in Room 11 with year 7 students

Lauren Roney - Lauren is our PE guru. She is incharge of the school PE programme and events along with Heidi Cleland as well as running a very interesting programme in room 9 with year 8 students. Lauren will continue to play rugby for Pirates and Otago this year and will keep coaching the highly successful girls cricket team.

Heidi Cleland - Congratulations goes to Heidi as she recently got married over the holidays. It may take some time for staff and students to remember her new name but the high quality programme she delivers to year 7 students in Room 24 will be the same. It is hoped that they will have a new classroom sometime in Room 24.

Mary Brady - Dean of specialist subjects - Mary will be continuing the high quality art programme that the school is so proud of. The recently painted murals and pieces that hang in the foyer are a testiment to her teaching ability. Mary was once a general classroom teacher but "saw the light" and retrained at art school to be an art teacher.

Alex Buttery - We like to call her the Muffin lady as the morning teas she make are quite exceptional and highly appreciated. Alex will continue to teach biotechnology and other interesting technological ideas to the Balmacewen, Green Island and Columba students this year.

Mark Henderson -Mark is one of our talented muscians on staff but he also teachers in the hard materials room. This is Marks second year of teaching at Balmacewen and he will continue to coach Hockey in 2010.

Janne Miller - Janne is our mathematics specialist. She runs the year 7 and 8 mathematics extension programmes each morning as well as the hugely successful mathletics teams.

Lindsey Moore -An Army marches on its stomach and school operates on its office staff, and Lindsey and Sandra are some of the best. The face of Balmacewen is a friendly one who has a passion for tennis and a spritely back hand!

Sandra Patterson - Sandra works part time in our office and in her spare time loves to head up to the backcountry and get away skiing. Sandra helps organise the ever popular ski school weekends.

Peter Friend - New to the staff in 2010 the new Mr Morris will be mowing the lawns, fixing things and getting the balls of the roof this year.

Sue Frame - Part one of our awesome twosome "the Sues." Sue F willl be working mainly with the special needs group and extension choir in 2010

Susan Mepham - The second part of the Sues is Susan Mepham. She will be helping Sue F with her role but also teaching the school to sing and also play ukelale this year.

Sue Lowden - Always with a smile on her face, Sue is one of the teacher aides who will be working in many classes this year but mainly in Room 7.

Marloes Leunnisen - Marloes is one of the schools teacher aides, fluent in sign language she will be helping students in many rooms in 2010.

Linda - Is the friendly face behind the canteen door who dishes out all the healthy food that we have on offer.
